Portable electric heaters can be a very cost effective move when it comes to heating your home. Instead of using your heat pump to warm the whole house, portable electric heaters can be moved into the rooms that you “live” in and need the heat. Many times these types of heaters are referred to as a space heater. Two places that come to my mind are your bedroom and living room.
When it comes down to the type of portable electric heater you need or want consider these types of electric space heaters:
Ceramic space heater, ceiling fan heaters, wall mount heaters, baseboard heaters, oil filled radiator style heaters (most energy efficient heaters on the market), tower space heaters (pictured top right) or even the compact heaters like the one on the left here, by Delonghi.
Before you get so confused you don’t know which end is up on portable electric heaters let’s give you a quick portable heat review of the different types of heat that are produced by the electric space heater.
- Radiant Heat: air flow doesn’t bother this heater because it only warms objects it faces
- Convection Heat: warms the air in the room
Convection heat is perfect for bedrooms of most sizes. You can easily warm the air in the room within an hour and the newer portable electric heaters will come with a thermostat that will keep the temperature at a certain level. Heck, most of the newer ones are digital as well as programmable.
Radiant heat on the other hand is perfect for large rooms that stand no chance in the world of ever getting up to room temperature. Places like a basement with no heat is what I am thinking about or your great room (living room) where you just need the heat on you or the couch. Do not under estimate the heating capabilities of radiant heat. I use one every day in our basement and I stay really warm and cozy.

As you can see there are portable electric heaters with multiple uses. Oftentimes it will come down to prices of the units. One of the best places to shop and compare portable heaters prices is Amazon. Never purchase anything without stopping by there and reading the customer reviews. They are priceless and will save you a lot of headache. We used them to help us purchase two different heaters last year and one of them was the electric fireplace heater.
One final note on portable electric heaters. Don’t purchase a larger heater for a small room. You will use extra energy that is wasted. Same goes for purchasing a smaller heater to warm a larger room, it will work it’s tail off the heat the room and never keep up.
Portable Electric Heater Prices
As we mentioned earlier radiant heaters direct heat to an object while a portable convection heater can heat an entire room by blowing heat from one side of the unit to the other. The air moves over a heating element/surface and then into the room. The price range for these types of heaters is $20-$110 + tax, shipping. Prices range from about $50 and up for Quartz Radiant Heaters or similar radiant heat. If you shop Amazon make sure and hold out for FREE Shipping. Now for those of you who like to work in your garage and need some type of heat whether it is fixed and hard wired heat or portable elctric heat or even portable gas heat.
Some of us like to work in our garage and it sure would be nice to have a shop heater. Garage heaters can be hung, they can be a radiant space heater, or they can be propane or portable kerosene heaters. Truthfully, the gas garage heaters would work best to create garage heat, because you have plenty of sources for ventilation. Keep in mind if you do not have very good insulation in your garage I’d lean towards convection or radiant space heaters. All you need to do is point it in the direction you will be working and let it warm the objects that it is facing.
I’m sure you have seen those a big shop heater in places like car dealerships service departments. They are usually tucked up into the corner of the garage and provide a ton of warm air. You notice it the most when the big garage doors open and close. These are not considered portable electric heaters because they are usually hard wired into the circuit.
